Updated: 4 days ago
Looking for something a little different to do in Wollongong?
Axe throwing is a great activity and a pretty good excuse to get your mates together and try something new!
At Battle Axe Throwing, we've been throwing axes in Wollongong since 2022. Our purpose-built venue in Wollongong CBD welcomes everyone from complete beginners having their first throw through to experienced players competing in leagues and Australia's biggest 4 Day Tournaments in Australia.
Never thrown an axe before? No problem!
Here's everything you need to know about axe throwing in Wollongong or in the Illawarra region, from what happens when you arrive to how you can turn your first session into a regular sport.

What is axe throwing?
It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.
You throw an axe at a wooden target and try to get it to stick and score points.
Your stance, grip, timing, release and consistency all make a difference. The good news is that you don't need to know any of this before you arrive.
Your Axe Coach will take you through safety, show you how to throw one-handed and two-handed and have you practice before you start your tournament!
Is axe throwing suitable for beginners?
Absolutely, most people who come to Battle Axe Throwing have never thrown an axe before.
We'll take you through the basics, explain how everything works and give you time to get comfortable with throwing. And don't worry if your first few throws aren't perfect. That's kind of the point! You'll get better throughout the session.
Is axe throwing safe?
Safety comes first at Battle Axe Throwing, that's why you'll have an assigned Axe Coach to each lane for your session.
Before you start, your coach will take you through Safety Induction, explain how to throw and have you practice, then they will take you through the rules.
Closed toe shoes are required.
What should I wear axe throwing?
Wear comfortable clothes that let you move naturally and make sure you're wearing closed toe shoes. Otherwise, we have some gum boots for you to wear during your session.
How long does axe throwing take?
Our standard sessions run for around two hours.
That gives you time to learn the basics, practice your throwing and get properly stuck into the session rather than feeling like you're just getting started when it's time to leave.
How many people can go axe throwing?
Axe throwing works for everything from a couple of mates looking for something to do through to larger groups and private events.
Battle Axe Throwing offers sessions for smaller groups, while private sessions are available for groups of 6 or more.
Each lane can accommodate up to 13 people.
Planning something bigger? Have a look at our 14+ people sessions or 30+ people sessions.
