Why Axe Throwing Works So Well for Corporate Team Building in NSW
Updated: Oct 1
At Battle Axe Throwing in Wollongong, we host corporate groups from across New South Wales, including teams travelling from Sydney, South Sydney, Canberra, the Illawarra and the South Coast.
If you need an activity that works for different personalities, gets people interacting and doesn't require previous experience or to be athleticthen this is a great fit.
And while axe throwing is fun and social, the activity itself is only part of why it works so well for team building, staff socials, end of quarter celebrations, Christmas parties and conference events.

Why axe throwing works for corporate team building
The best team building activities give people a reason to interact naturally and axe throwing does that without requiring everyone to be particularly sporty, competitive or experienced.
Most people arrive having never thrown an axe before. As part of your session at Battle Axe Throwing, everyone starts by learning the basics, then gets plenty of opportunities to practice, improve and compete.
That creates plenty of moments for people to encourage each other, celebrate a first bullseye, laugh at the occasional miss and discover who in the office has a skill for hitting clutches.
Some groups get competitive and some are there mainly for the social side, but most end up doing a bit of both! That makes axe throwing suitable for a wide range of corporate events, from a small team social through to a larger company gathering.
The format keeps everyone involved
One of the biggest challenges with corporate team building is keeping the whole group involved.
At Battle Axe Throwing, our sessions use a Round Robin Tournament format. That means rather than being eliminated after an early loss participants continue playing through the competition before the finals.
People also face different opponents throughout the session, so colleagues naturally mix with people they might not normally work with. For a corporate group that can make a big difference.
Instead of one group of friends sticking together while everyone else does their own thing, the format gives people reasons to interact with the wider team.
And because everyone is new to the sport, there is no expectation that you need to be good at it before you start!

Your coach stays with you throughout the session
Another important part of the Battle Axe Throwing experience is the coaching.
Your group is not simply given a safety briefing, shown how to throw and left to figure things out for themselves. Our coaches stay with the lanes throughout the session to give you a personalised experience.
They provide feedback, keep the session moving, help people improve their throwing and play off the dynamics of the group.
That means the session can adapt as it goes so if your group gets competitive, we can lean into that or if they are more interested in having a laugh and enjoying the atmosphere, that works too!
The goal is to give everyone the chance to get involved and have a good experience, regardless of how they approach the competition.
Corporate axe throwing for small and large teams
Corporate groups at Battle Axe Throwing can range from smaller teams through to much larger company events. We regularly host groups of 6 to 40 people, with larger groups able to discuss a full venue experience and custom package with our team.
That makes it possible to bring together an entire department, a group of colleagues from different locations or a larger conference group.
The experience also scales without changing what makes it work: dedicated lanes, coaching, structured competition and plenty of opportunities for people to interact and do something fun.

Battle Axe Throwing is located in Wollongong CBD, making it easy to combine an axe throwing session with other parts of your corporate event. Groups can meet for a conference, head to Battle Axe Throwing for their team activity, then continue on to nearby restaurants, bars and hotels.
We are also close to the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach and Hotel TOTTO conference rooms, which can make planning a conference or corporate event in Wollongong easier.
You can treat axe throwing as the entire event or it can be one part of a fuller itinerary.
We've hosted corporate groups from a range of workplaces
Corporate groups do not all look the same, and that is part of what makes the format work.
We've hosted big groups including around 15-30 people from BlueScope, technology firm Novigi, and teachers from Little Zak's Academy.
We've also welcomed groups connected with Wollongong City Council Library and Howlin' Wolf Bar, alongside businesses and teams from across the region.
Whether your group already knows each other well or you are bringing together people from different teams and locations, our goal is to create an experience where everyone can participate.
